About the Play:
Ian Finley’s Native is a resonant conversation about racism, social justice, politics, and personal agency that speaks to our time. Based on the true story of the collaboration between Pulitzer Prize winner Paul Green and the controversial author of Native Son, Richard Wright, the play explores systemic issues faced then and now.
The narrative follows the two authors' collaboration, starting in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and moving to New York during World War II, highlighting their differences and the impact on their friendship - and shared goal of social change.
Cast and Crew:
Richard Wright: J. Mardrice Henderson
Paul Green: David zum Brunnen
Playwright: Ian Finley
Director: Serena Ebhardt
Stage Manager: Natasha Jackson
Historical Background:
Native was workshopped at Chapel Hill’s Deep Dish Theatre Company in 2015 and began its eastern U.S. tour in 2017. It was adapted into the award-winning film The Problem of the Hero which was released in February, 2023, and is currently finishing its film festival run. This Raleigh stage premiere aims to continue the conversation on social justice and racial issues.
Post-show discussions with the artists will take place after each Sunday matinee, (September 15 and September 22) to foster further dialogue on the play's themes.
We hope to see you there!
